Why Good Kuma?

It started with a realization about my 14-year-old Maltese, Lulu.

Lulu is energetic, happy, and fiercely loved. But a few years ago, I noticed she was constantly biting and licking her paws. If you’ve ever dealt with dry, cracked skin or chapped lips, you know exactly how uncomfortable, itchy, and distracting it can be. I realized with a wave of guilt that while I never neglected my own daily skincare routine, I had been ignoring Lulu’s paws for years.

Then I did some math. During a typical, breezy 30-minute neighborhood walk, a dog takes over 9,000 steps.

Think about that. Nine thousand steps on abrasive asphalt, blistering summer pavement, or harsh winter sidewalks. I wouldn’t dream of stepping outside without applying my daily moisturizer, UV protection, or lip balm—yet I was letting my best friend take 9,000 steps completely unprotected.

When I looked for a solution, I noticed a frustrating trend: every pet brand on the market promoted their balms for extreme wilderness conditions—mushing through sled races or hiking rugged mountains. But our dogs live in the real world. They don't need a heavy, industrial wax meant for the tundra; they need an elegant, daily preventative skincare routine.

That is why I created Good Kuma.
